We're Back!It's been a very busy summer and we apologize for letting the newsletter ball drop. We made some subtle changes to the layout of the web site. The "Home" page is now the Berne Historical Project and because of the increase in the number of cemeteries that we now have online we had to break up the surname index into sections. Joan has also redesigned the cemetery pages to make them easier to look at. Several new census records from Kevin's group have been added with more coming soon. Check us out at www.bernehistory.org
Please send any comments, suggestions, ideas, content, whatever ... to webmasters@bernehistory.org. Gordon and Joan http://www.bernehistory.org |
Web Site StatsJuly 2001
August 2001
Where the web site is going.
One of the incredible aspects of collecting all of this data in one place is going to be the ability to perform online searches for the surnames you may be interested in. Every bit of data that we have collected so far has been entered into a database that will someday be the heart of this website. Where you now navigate to a static web page that may contain a listing of all the headstones in a cemetery or an entire census, in the near future you will be able to enter a surname and be presented with a dynamic list that will contain links to all the individuals matching your search. For example, if you are looking for the grave of an ancestor you would enter their surname and a database search would be performed. The results might contain the information we currently post on the static pages, full name, maiden name, date died, transcription and location. Also available would be a link to a dynamic page that would list all the information for that person. We currently maintain the following data;
Full name Maiden name Date born Date died Transcription Epitaph Location Photo1 Caption1 Photo2 Caption2 Marker material Marker condition Notes Transcribed by Transcribed date Verified by Verified date Photo by Photo date Longitude Latitude
The same type of search capabilities will be available for any data we have in the database, church records, census records, land records, wills, obits and cemeteries. Cool, huh. EMAIL AddressesOur hosting arrangement with earthlink allows us five email addresses that are set up to forward to another address. We have set up the following addresses.
historian@bernehistory.org - This will be forwarded to Ralph Miller. volunteer@bernehistory.org - This will come to Joan and Gordon and be used to solicit additional volunteers from the web page. newsletter@bernehistory.org - Used to subscribe or unsubscribe to the newsletter. webmasters@bernehistory.org - To get related information to Joan and Gordon. |
Volunteers
We have a couple of new volunteers who will be working with the churches in Berne to transcribe the baptism, marriage and death records. They have already started on the baptism records of the Reformed Church. We will post the records as they become available. We are also hoping to benefit from the efforts of a local scout who is organizing an inventory of the Berne and Beverdam Cemetery as part of his Eagle project. This is a very ambitious project as this cemetery contains more than a thousand graves.
Census UpdateKevin and his group has been very busy this summer. As of this weekend we now have the following Berne census records available for download.
1790 Federal 1800 Federal 1840 Federal 1850 Federal 1855 State 1905 State
These records are available as spreadsheets that the Census Team has taken great pains to replicate, not only the content, but the format of the original documents as well. Along with the Census Teams transcribing, the extra effort that Kevin has put into the spreadsheets to re-create the original census document pages, results in an impressive document. Cemetery UpdateBarbara and Joan have also been busy this summer. The website now contains records for thirty-two cemeteries and Barbara has completed the inventory and photographs for fourteen of them.
Our process goes like this; Joan is entering the records produced by William V. Hannay for the Dutch Settlers Society in the mid 1930's. These records contain the basic information on the headstones as found in the 1930's. Web pages are created without photos and we post the information. When Barbara completes her field work on each cemetery she mails the photos and records to Joan who then verifies and updates the records we have from the Dutch Settlers Society. Pictures are added and the website page is updated.
