Welcome to the Berne Historical Project.Well, here we are. It's official, we have a web site. Joan and I would like to thank everyone and ask all of you to provide feedback on what you like or don't like about this web site. If you have ideas on content, tools, layout, anything, please send us a note. Tell your friends and neighbors (especially those in Berne). If you are heading a group of volunteers please send us content as it becomes available, it will give us time to determine a good layout for the data. Above all, keep in mind this is a work in progress and a group effort and any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated. Please send any comments, suggestions, ideas, content, whatever ... to webmasters@bernehistory.org. This address will now be the best one to use for anything related to this project.Gordon and Joan www.bernehistory.org |
UpdatesHarold Miller has submitted a number of articles of local interest to our site and is actively involved in the research involving land records. He has submitted the following request:I would like the site and the next bulletin to give my e-mail address and postal address and ask anyone who has transcriptions or copies of leases or early deeds to get them to me. I am also interested in lot / lease and grid numbers for Berne families along with appropriate dates. If the people who were there before of after are known, that would also be most helpful.

Volunteers
This project as with many genealogical projects is a cooperative effort of a group of volunteers. Volunteers are the heart and soul and will make or break a project such as this one. Everyone involved deserves recognition for their hard work and the time they contribute. We have attempted in this first cut at a web page to provide a means to recognize those involved. On the Berne History Project page there is an outline of the different aspects of the project and a listing of those involved. Linked to this page is a BHP members page where we can post short bio's on the volunteers. If anyone has anything they would like posted here, please send it to webmasters@bernehistory.org.
Since this project will encompass different types of information covering a wide geographical area the contributions of volunteers are vital. As with any large project different people have different areas of interest and would naturally rather work in one of those areas. In my case, I feel strongly that the older cemeteries need to be documented before they are lost so I have offered to do what I can in that area. I'm sure each of you have areas of personal interest and you are all encouraged to participate in something that you feel strongly about. If this work helps you make a connection, or find a lost relative it's great forr you and good for this project.
Even though the current project is focused on Berne we feel that any pertinent information, even from the surrounding communities will benefit this project in the long run. This area has a long and interesting history (as Hal can contest to) and anything we can get from volunteers will be greatly appreciated. |
Logo Ideas
This is a draft of a logo that Joan came up with, feedback and suggestions please. If you have any images that represent the Berne area, please send to Joan Wright along with their significance. Anything can be incorporated, like a crisp photo or I could make a pen-and-ink drawing of a landmark.Once we decide on a design, everyone will be free to use it. |
Darin is very busy with the maps and the future database and submitted the following:Just
thought I would give you a status report for the project newsletter.

One issue we are sure will need to be addressed is the compatibility of different browsers. We are both pretty new to this and are still researching how to make a web site browser friendly. We use MS Internet Explorer so we know what it looks like using that browser. If anyone uses a different flavor please let us know what problems you see.

Kevin has submitted the following census team update:
After a rough start, we're getting on track with one another. Templates for the censuses are being made up and distributed as soon as possible. Currently censuses in the works are the 1790 - 1850 - 1855 - and possibly the 1910. Other members are preparing for start-up in the near future. The 1720 Census of Albany Co. was transcribed by a currently unknown author on genealogy.com and is complete to the best of my knowledge. We have a long ( and bumpy? ) road ahead of us, but I am confident that things will smooth out as we go along with this part of the project. Everyone seems eager to accomplish their part of the project.
