The National Archives has complied service records for many military unites representing NY in the revolution (generally none lower than Regimental). Some of the titles listed are Philip Schuyler's Regiment, Militia and Vrooman's Regiment (Albany County, Militia).

The general outline below can be considered neither all inclusive or static. Both the militia and Continental line were constantly reorganized based on new authorization tables and or attrition. Regiments were deactivated and the companies assigned to other Regiments in these reorganizations. To further add confusion many of the units were only identified by the commander and not the numerical designation (if one was assigned).
